I'm an Executive Creative Director. What do I do? Advertising. Because I remember that my job is to help brands, you know ... sell their stuff.
Almost twenty years (give or take) I've been in this business. 10-ish in leadership jobs. Started in digital. Went traditional. Saw social, and went all-in. Now I kitbash the three to create ideas that work everywhere. Online, offline, wherever.
I've worked for airlines. Beer brands. An eye-wateringly expensive luxury watch brand. A less expensive luxury watch brand. A big shoe retailer. A luxury pe—*cough*, sorry, "writing instrument" brand. A direct broadcast pay TV platform whose set-top box required a PhD to figure out. A biscuit brand. Ah, no, sorry: two biscuit brands. Nope, make that three. And a bunch of others.
And I've done the actual work: strategy, concept, shoot supervision, hovering over the poor editor in post, pitches. Even directed a couple of those films (that was fun!). Love it all.
Big teams. Small teams. Doesn't matter the size, I try to make sure they enjoy coming to work. And I don't throw them under the bus. I try to teach them something new, but if they teach me something new, that's really awesome.
Same goes for clients. I try to make sure they enjoy dealing with the agency I work for. That they feel we're not wasting either their time or money. That they get what they need from us to do to whatever it is they need to do. But I'm never afraid to suggest a better way if I think there is one.
PS: All of my decks start with the eye-candy first. Then why I'm proposing it. Then how much it will cost. And I try to keep them under 50 slides.
Last but not least, I'm an anime/manga/pop culture nerd. Passionate traveller. Incorrigible foodie. And I’ll make you the best Kumamoto ramen this side of Japan. And birria tacos.
